Exhibition 1: Growth

This series of works focuses on both physical and mental growth, specifically, my growth from infant to age 5, expressed in both terrestrial and aquatic-inspired materials. My biological parents were my determinants and the world was my book. They may have taught me how to read, but I experienced and explored the world in my own little way, They were the king and queen, and I was their curious little princess.

Nourished From Her Bosoms

This is an earthy green ivy corset that represents both the growth of the world around me and in memory of the "world" that grew me, my mother. It is cupped, size medium to large with hook-and-eye closures.

Figure Garden

This is an acrylic painting of women's torsos, surrounded by luscious greenery with just enough coral-pink flowers. This painting illustrates the mental garden of a young girl whose mother is absent. Every woman in her world is an example or figure of who she could become but not quite the mother figure. The empty pedestal awaits her return.

A Sea Princess Set

The fishnet crochet skirt with shell hoop accents, paired with a shell and pearl crown is an embodiment of my freedom when I was on the beach. In my youth, the ocean made me feel alive, allowing me to explore different textures, sounds, and animals. The beach fueled the fire-like curiosity that burned within me. It gave me knowledge and power, and sometimes sand in my mouth.

This jewelry set is a combination of the two natural beauties I love most in this world: pearls and shells. The pearls represent sophistication, beauty, and elegance, three things I strive to have. The shells represent strength, resilience, and love, three characteristics that the most amazing women in my life all share.

Fireflies On The Beach

This spaghetti-strapped, yellow tulle gown and feathered beach crown set radiates energy and happiness, two feelings that hit me like a wave when I ran across the beach. The dress was inspired by two lights that reassured me that the day was not over: the sun and fireflies. The crown was inspired by freedom with flowy feathers and tiny shell pieces as a symbol of my curiosity.
